Gretzky's Goal

Building a backyard hockey rink is probably the best thing you can do for a young hockey player. What if Walter Gretzky had never built a backyard rink? A backyard rink gives a child the time, space and freedom to be creative and have fun with the game.

And if you're searching for a way to get your kids to get off the couch and spend some quality time with each other, a backyard rink is a no-brainer. Don't let your kids waste most of their childhood years staring at a TV screen, give them an excuse to get outside and produce some quality memories.

“As tweenies and teenies, my sister and I weren’t the greatest of companions around the dinner table every night and conversational topics were sparse. But we could talk about the rink. It was our own conversational safe haven, and possibly the lone passion shared by all four of us. And get the four of us out on the rink, be it skating or shoveling out after another winter storm, and we came together with a closeness that was absent from other arenas. Conversations were easier, jokes funnier, rebukes less stinging, personal questions less probing (and if you really took offense, you could always thrown the next puck in the offender’s corner and settle it the old fashioned way). The rink was, in our house at least, the only thing that could effectively bridge the parent-child/generational chasm.”

BACKYARD-HOCKEY.com tells their own personal story about making a backyard rink. This site is a honest and sincere blog written by a hockey dad. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Building a rink under $300
  • 6 hour step-by-step plan
  • Inspiration to uniting friends and family
  • Potential progress of a young hockey player

As BASE Hockey headquarters is located in the one Canadian city that has no opportunity to build backyard hockey rinks, we want your personal stamp of approval for BACKYARD-HOCKEY.com's methods. Drop us a comment if you're going to try it out this year, and we want to follow your backyard hockey stories!

Lots of areas of Canada and the US do not have the temperatures to keep an ice rink, let alone start one. Consider another option Synthetic Ice by Smart Rink! BASE sticks work well on GREAT synthetic ice.
